Recognize and prevent heat related illness. As summer heats up, so does the risk of developing heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. 

  1. Heat Cramps
  2. One of the first symptoms of heat illness is often brief but severe cramping in muscles

    Treatment:

    1. Immediately get out of the heat and find the nearest cool place
    2. Rehydrate with cool water
    3. Do light stretching of affected muscles
  3. Heat Exhaustion
  4. Symptoms:

    • Intense thirst and reports of dehydration
    • Weakness or fatigue, clammy skin

    Other possible symptoms:

    • Nausea or vomiting, headache
    • Rapid breathing, irritability

    Treatment:

    1. Immediately get out of the heat and find the nearest cool place
    2. Drink small amounts of cool water
    3. Cool the body by fanning, submerging hands and forearm in a cool water bath or by placing ice pack in the underarm and inner thigh region
    If there is no improvement, seek medical attention!
  5. Heat Stroke
  6. If heat exhaustion is allowed to progress, it can develop into heat stroke.

    HEAT STROKE IS A LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY AND REQUIRES IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION.

    Symptoms:

    • High internal body temperature
    • HOT and DRY skin, NO SWEATING
    • Weak pulse, rapid breathing
    • Possible loss of consciousness

    Treatment:If you suspect heat stroke:

    1. Call 911 for advanced help.
    2. Move the person to a cool place and attempt to cool the body.
    3. If the person is lucid, they can attempt to drink SMALL amounts of cool water.

The best treatment of all heat illness is PREVENTION.
